Rana is the Senior Vice President, Real Estate and Chief Legal Officer at Aspen Skiing Company, the privately held company that owns and operates Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, Buttermilk, the Limelight Hotel, the Little Nell, on mountain restaurants and all 4 Mountain Sports/D&E locations. In her current role, all Legal; Planning and Development; Sustainability and Community Engagement; and Public Relations functions for Aspen Skiing Company report in to Rana.
While her function is broader, Rana’s primary focus is as Chief Legal Officer, where her primary activities include management of the three lawyer team, strategic planning, joint venture and strategic engagement negotiation, creation and activation, mergers and acquisitions, real estate development, sponsorship agreements, trademark management, operational agreements, technology agreements, and outside counsel management. Beyond responsibility for legal functions for Aspen Skiing Company, Rana also oversees the Company’s real estate development activity. Her work managing the Sustainability and Community Engagement as well as Public Relations functions is geared towards ensuring that the Company manages and communicates its business in a manner consistent with its core values.
Rana began her career in the litigation department of the international law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson. From there Rana moved to a smaller music and entertainment law firm, Grubman, Indursky and Shire, in New York. Tired of working for outside counsel, in 2001, Rana made the move to an in-house position joining Madison Square Garden as Director of Legal and Business Affairs. There Rana was one of two in-house attorneys supporting the New York Knicks (NBA), the New York Rangers (NHL) and the New York Liberty (WNBA). Rana also focused on sponsorship and media support for Madison Square Garden’s MSG Network, a regional sports network.
Rana left Madison Square Garden in 2007 as a Vice President and move west to become the Deputy General Counsel, and then General Counsel and Chief of Legal and Government Relations of the United States Olympic Committee. After almost 8 years with the USOC, Rana joined Aspen Skiing Company in 2014 as Vice President and General Counsel.
With her broad exposure to both pure legal work as well as the intersection of legal and business, Rana has developed a thoughtful, expansive but pragmatic approach to legal engagement with business. She focuses on ensuring that the Company is well protected, but also works hard to make sure that the cross departmental collaboration is utilized to achieve the best strategic business decisions possible.
Rana is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School and is licensed to practice law in both New York and Colorado.
When not working, Rana loves to ski, hike, bike and spend time with her family.
