Tour a SNOTEL site! Understanding Snowpack and its role in Western Water

Snow is a way of life here in Colorado. It is also our water supply. Come discover the relationship between snow and water during this “field trip for adults” with Roaring Fork Conservancy and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Meet us in Redstone where we'll carpool to McClure Pass.  Participants will learn what snowpack means in terms of water, soil moisture, forest health, and how climate variability is impacting it all. After a short discussion, we will walk to a field location on McClure Pass to learn how to conduct a snow course survey and collect and analyze samples.  Participants will also have the unique opportunity to visit a SNOTEL site at the top of McClure Pass!

Limited to 16 participants.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Personal snowshoes are required!
  • Please be prepared to drive/carpool to McClure Pass.
  • Appropriate for ages 12 years and older. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Please dress appropriately with boots, layers, and gloves appropriate for the snow.  The entire duration of this program is outside.
  • Please bring snacks and water, as needed.
  • Dogs are not permitted on this program.
