Meet Your Headwaters

Meet Your Headwaters is a 3-day expedition to the Roaring Fork Valley where students who participated in Watershed PenPal, connect with their pen pal and explore the natural systems that shape our shared rivers and water systems. Participants dive into the heart of Colorado’s headwaters and witness firsthand where it all begins!

This program creates:

  1. Unforgettable Experiences
    • Students raft on beautiful rivers, hike alongside babbling brooks, and immerse themselves in the environment.
    • Using digital cameras, pen pals capture the beauty of their surroundings and through reflective journaling, students document their headwater experiences.
    • This documentation will be used to help educate their communities, law makers, and water managers, about the importance of water conservation through presentations and visual displays.
  2. Positive Relationships:
    • Students bond with their pen pals as they explore together.
    • Participants build connections centered around valuing water and the natural world .
  3. Educational Insights:
    • Groups learn about the physical, chemical, and biological health of rivers.
    • Firsthand experiences help illuminate the vital role of headwaters in our ecosystem.

Meet Your Headwaters is funded by RFC donors, Colorado Water Conservation Board and Pitkin County Healthy Rivers.
Meet Your Headwaters partners are Aurora Water, Blazing Adventures, Roaring Fork School District, Aurora School District and Cherry Creek School District.
